Alabama CME Requirements

25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ every year

The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and Medical Licensure Commission of Alabama requires physicians to earn 25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ every year to meet their CME requirements. Rollover credits are not permitted.

Alaska CME Requirements

50 AMA or AOA approved CME Credits™ every 2 years

The Alaska State Medical Board requires physicians to earn 50 total CME hours every two years. These credits must be approved either by the AMA or AOA.

Arizona CME Requirements

40 AMA/AOA Category 1/Category 2 credits™ every two years.

The Arizona Medical Board requires physicians to earn 40 AMA or AOA Category 1 or 2 Credits™ every 2 years. The board does not allow rollover credits.

If you are part of the Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine and Surgery instead, you must earn 40 CME credits every 2 years. 24 of these credits must be AOA Category 1 Credits ^TM.

Arkansas CME Requirements

20 CME Credits every year.

The Arkansas State Medical Board requires physicians to earn 20 CME credits every year. 10 of these 20 CME Credits must be Category 1 Credits and in the physician's primary area of practice.

California CME Requirements

50 CME Credits every 2 years
One time requirement of 12 CME Credits on Pain Management and Appropriate Treatment of Ill.

The Medical Board of California requires physicians to earn 50 CME credits every 2 years. In addition, physicians licensed by this board must meet a one time requirement of 12 CME Credits on Pain Management and Appropriate Treatment of the Terminally Ill. These 12 credits can count towards the total of the 2 year requirement of 50 CME Credits. These 12 credits also must be completed by the physician's second license renewal date or within 4 years.

Physicians part of the Osteopathic Board of California have a different set of CME requirements. They must complete a total of 150 AMA or AOA Category 1 or 2 Credits™ every 3 years. A minimum of these credits must be AOA 1-A or AOA 1-B and a maximum of 90 of the credits may be category 2A or 3A credits.

There is also a one time requirement for the Osteopathic Board of California of 12 CME hours on Pain Management and/or appropriate care and treatment of the terminally ill. These credits can also be applied towards the total number needed in the renewal cycle.

Colorado CME Requirements

No Continuing Education requirements for physicians

The Colorado Medical Board does not require physicians to earn CME credits to maintain their license and certification. However, there are CME requirements for physician assistants. Physician Assistants in Colorado must earn 100 CME Credits every 2 years. 25 Category 1 CME Credits must be earned within the past 12 months and physician assistants must renew their license every 2 years.

Connecticut CME Requirements

50 CME Credits every 2 years in the physician's area of practice.
1 Credit in various subjects (see below) during the first renewal period and every 3rd renewal period (6 years) after that.

The State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health requires physicians to earn 50 CME credits every 2 years in their area of practice. They must also earn one credit in each of the following specialties during their first renewal period and once within every 6 year period after.

Delaware CME Requirements

100 CME Credits every 2 years.
- 50 of these CME Credits must be Category 1 Credits.

The Delaware Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline requires physicians 100 CME Credits every 2 years. 50 of these CME Credits must be Category 1 Credits.

District of Columbia CME Requirements

50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years.

The District of Columbia Board of Medicine requires physicians to earn 50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years.

Florida CME Requirements

40 AMA Approved Credits^TM every 2 years.
- 2 of the credits must be on Medical Error CME
- 2 of the credits must be on Domestic Violence CME every 3rd Renewal Period.

The Florida Department of Health, Division of Medical Quality Assurance requires physicians to earn 40 AMA CME Credits^TM every 2 years.

2 of the 40 credits must be on Medical Error. Also, the CME activities used to earn these credits must include information on the 5 most misdiagnosed conditions. This required by Rule 64B8-13.005, F.A.C. In addition, 2 of the credits must be on Domestic Violence during every 3rd renewal cycle.

It is important to note that physicians in Florida are not required to meet the general Florida CME requirements if they are in the midst of their first license renewal. Instead, they must earn 2 CME Credits on Preventing Medical Errors and 1 CME Credit on HIV/AIDS.

Georgia CME Requirements

40 CME Credits every 2 years

The Georgia Composite Medical Board requires physicians to earn 40 CME credits every 2 years. These can be any type of CME credits.

Hawaii CME Requirements

40 Category 1 or 1-A Credits^TM every 2 years.

The Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners requires physicians to earn 40 Category 1 or 1-A Credits^TM every 2 years. Osteopathic Physicians in Hawaii have the same set of requirements.

Idaho CME Requirements

40 Category 1 CME Credits every two years in the physician's focus.

The Idaho State Board of Medicine requires physicians to earn 40 Category 1 CME Credits every two years. The activities used to earn these credits must be in the physician's primary area of focus.

Illinois CME Requirements

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation requires physicians to earn a total of 150 CME Credits every 3 years. At least 60 of these credits must be Category 1 CME Credits.

Indiana CME Requirements

No CME Requirements

The Medical Licensing Board of Indiana does not require physicians to earn any CME credits.

Iowa CME Requirements

40 Category 1 Credits every 2 years

The Iowa Board of Medicine requires physicians to earn 40 Category 1 Credits every 2 years. Up to 20 Credits may be carried over to the next renewal period if you earn over 40 credits in a renewal period.

Primary Care Physicians must also earn 2 Category 1 Credits in Chronic Pain Management and 2 Category 1 Credits in End of Life Care every 5 years.

Kansas CME Requirements

50 CME Credits every year
- 20 must be Category 1 Credits

The Kansas State Board of Healing Arts gives physicians the option if they want to renew their license every 1, 2, or 3 years. They must earn 50 CME credits, at least 20 of which must be Category 1 Credits, for every year since their last renewal. For example, if you chose to renew your license every 3 years, you would be required to earn 150 CME Credits (60 Category 1 Credits) during the renewal period.

Kentucky CME Requirements

60 CME Credits every 3 years
- 30 must be AMA or AOA approved Category 1 Credits™.

The Kentucky State Board of Medical Licensure requires physicians to earn 60 CME Credits every 3 years. 30 of the 60 Credits earned during this renewal period must be AMA or AOA approved Category 1 Credits™.

Louisiana CME Requirements

20 Category 1 CME Credits every year

The Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners requires physicians to earn 20 Category 1 CME Credits every year.

Maine CME Requirements

100 CME Credits every 2 years
- 40 must be Category 1 Credits

The Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine requires physicians to earn 100 CME Credits every 2 years. At least 40 of the 100 CME Credits earned during the renewal period must be Category 1 Credits.

The Maine Board of Osteopathic Licensure has similar requirements. This board also requires 100 CME Credits every 2 years. 40 of the credits, however, must be approved as osteopathic medical education.

Maryland CME Requirements

50 Category 1 Credits every year

The Maryland Board of Physicians requires physicians to earn 50 Category 1 Credits every year.

Massachusetts CME Requirements

100 CME Credits every 2 years
- 40 must be AMA or AAPA Category 1 Credits™

The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine requires physicians to earn 100 CME Credits every 2 years. At least 40 of these CME credits must be AMA or AAPA Category 1 Credits™.

Michigan CME Requirements

150 CME Credits every 3 years
- 75 must be Category 1 CME Credits
- 1 credit must be Medical Ethics CME
- 3 credits must be Pain and Symptom Management CME

The Michigan Board of Medicine requires physicians to earn 150 CME hours every 3 years. At least 75 of these credits must be Category 1 CME Credits. Also, at least 1 of these credits must be Medical Ethics CME and at least 3 of these credits must be Pain and Symptom Management CME.

Like the Michigan Board of Medicine, the Michigan Board of Osteopathic requires 150 CME Credits every 3 years. This board requires less Category 1 Credits, however. 60 of the 150 Credits must be Category 1 Credits. Also, a minimum of 3 credits earned during the renewal period must be Pain and Symptom Management CME.

Minnesota CME Requirements

75 Category 1 Credits every 3 years

The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice requires physicians to earn 75 Category 1 Credits every 3 years.

Mississippi CME Requirements

40 Category 1 Credits every 2 years

The Mississippi State Board of Medicine requires physicians to earn 40 Category 1 Credits every 2 years.

Missouri CME Requirements

50 CME Credits every 2 years. These credits can be:
- AMA Category 1 credits™
- AOA Category 1-A or 2-A credits™
- AAFP prescribed credits™

The Missouri Board of Registration for the healing arts requires physicians to earn 50 CME Credits every 2 years. These 50 credits may be AMA Category 1, AOA Category 1-A or 2-A, or AAFP prescribed credits™.

You only need to earn 40 credits, however, if all 40 are AMA Category 1 or AOA Category 1-A credits^TM. The CME activities must also feature a post-exam on the material to fall under this criteria.

Physicians do not need to meet these CME requirements if they received their initial license during the previous renewal period.

Montana CME Requirements

No CME requirements

The Montana Board of Medical Examiners does not require physicians to earn any CME credits.

Nebraska CME Credits

50 AMA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years

The Nebraska Board of Medicine and Surgery requires physicians to earn 50 AMA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years. Physicians can carry up to 24 credits to the next renewal cycle if they earn over 50 credits in the current cycle.

Nevada CME Requirements

40 AMA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years
- 20 must be in the physician's primary area of practice
- 2 must be in Medical Ethics CME, Pain Management CME, or Addiction Care CME

The Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners requires physicians to earn 40 AMA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years. At least 20 of these 40 CME credits must be in the physician's primary area of practice. Also, at least 2 out of the 40 credits must be in Medical Ethics, Pain Management, or Addiction Care.

Psychiatrists in Nevada must earn an additional 2 credits in suicide prevention and awareness in addition to the general Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners requirements.

Members of the Nevada State Board of Osteopathic Medicine have a different set of requirements. They have to earn 35 CME credits every year and these credits can be any type.

New Hampshire CME Requirements

100 AMA PRA or ACCME CME Credits™ every 2 years
- 40 must be AMA PRA or ACCME Category 1 Credits™

The New Hampshire State Board of Medicine requires physicians to earn 100 AMA PRA or ACCME Credits™ every 2 years. At least 40 of these 100 credits must be Category 1 Credits.

Physicians licensed in NDE-DEA must earn 3 credits in board approved Opioid CME in addition to the general New Hampshire State Board of Medicine requirements.

New Jersey CME Requirements

100 CME Credits every 2 years
- 40 must be AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™
- One time requirement of 6 Credits in Cultural Competency CME.

The New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners requires physicians to earn 100 CME credits every 2 years. At least 40 of these 100 credits must be AMA Category 1 Credits™ to meet the requirement.

In addition to the 100 CME credits, the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners has a one time requirement of 6 CME credits in Cultural Competency. If licensed after March 24, 2005 these credits may count towards the total of 100 needed during the renewal process.

New Mexico CME Requirements

75 CME Credits every 3 years

The New Mexico Medical Board requires physicians to earn 75 CME Credits on any type every 3 years.

Physicians can also meet the Mexico National Board's CME requirements by winning different awards or certificates. These awards include:

American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Certificate of Continuing Education
Certification or recertification by an ABMS approved specialty board

New York CME Requirements

No CME requirements

The New York State of Medicine does not require physicians to earn any credits.

North Carolina CME Requirements

60 Category 1 Credits in the physician's area of practice

The North Carolina Medical Board requires physicians to earn 60 Category 1 Credits in the physician's area of practice. This requirement does not apply to physicians that have a residency training license.

Physicians in North Carolina who prescribe controlled substances have an additional requirement. They must also earn 3 CME credits in Controlled Substances in addition to the 60 Category 1 Credits in the physician's area of practice.

North Dakota CME Requirements

60 Category 1 Credits every 3 years

The North Dakota State Board of Medical Examiners requires physicians to earn 60 Category 1 Credits every 3 years.

Ohio CME Requirements

100 CME Credits every 2 years
- 40 must be Category 1 Credits

The State Medical Board of Ohio requires physicians to earn 100 CME Credits every 2 years. At least 40 of these 100 credits must be Category 1 Credits.

Oklahoma CME Requirements

60 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ every 3 years

The Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision requires physicians to earn 60 AMA Category 1 Credits™ every 3 years.

The Oklahoma State Board of Osteopathic Examiners has a different set of CME requirements than the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision. This board requires members to earn 16 AOA Category 1 Credits every year. They must also earn 1 Credit in Proper Prescribing CME in addition to the 16 AOA Category 1 Credits.

Oregon CME Requirements

60 CME Credits every 2 years. These credits can be:
- AMA Category 1™
- AOA Category 1™
- APMA Category 1™
- AAPA Category 1™
- 6 must be on Pain Management CME and/or Treatment of the Terminally Ill.

The Oregon Medical Board requires physicians to earn 60 AMA, AOA, APMA, or AAPA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years. At least 6 of these 60 credits must be in Pain Management and/or the Treatment of the Terminally Ill.

Pennsylvania CME Requirements

100 CME Credits every 2 years
- 20 must be AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™
- 12 must be on Patient Safety CME and/or Risk Management CME
- 2 must be on Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting

The Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine requires physicians to earn 100 CME Credits every 2 years. At least 12 of these CME credits must be on Patient Safety and/or Risk Management and at least 2 of the credits must be on Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting.

There are a different set of requirements for physicians licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Osteopathic Medicine. Members of this board must earn 100 CME credits every 2 years. At least 20 of these credits must be AOA Category 1-A Credits™. In addition, at least 12 of the 100 credits needed for renewal must be Category 1 or 2 Credits on Pain Management and/or Risk Management.

Rhode Island CME Requirements

40 AMA Category 1 or AOA Category 1-A Credits™ every 2 years
4 Credits must be on Public Health Needs CME

The Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline requires physicians to earn 40 AMA Category 1 or AOA Category 1-A Credits™ every 2 years.

4 out of the 40 CME credits needed for renewal must be on topics of current concern. These topics are determined by the director of the Rhode Island Department of Health and currently include:

South Carolina CME Requirements

40 AMA or AOA Category 1 Credits™
- 30 must be in the physician's primary area of practice
- 2 credits must be on Approved Procedures of Prescribing and Monitoring Controlled Substances

The South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners requires physicians to earn 40 AMA or AOA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years. At least 30 of the 40 credits must be in the physician's primary area of practice. In addition, 2 of the 40 credits must be on the topic of Approved Procedures of Prescribing and Monitoring Controlled Substances.

South Dakota CME Requirements

No CME Requirements

The South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Medical Examiners does not require physicians to earn any CME credits.

Tennessee CME Requirements

40 AMA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years
- 2 must be on Controlled Substance Prescribing

The Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners requires physicians to earn 40 AMA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years.

At least 2 of the 40 credits needed during the renewal process must be on the topic of Controlled Substance Prescribing. The Controlled Substance Prescribing courses must specifically include information and instruction on opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and carisoprodol. Physicians certified in Pain Management, Anesthesiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurology, or Rheumatology by the ABMS, AOA, or the American Board of Physician Specialties are exempt from this requirement.

The Tennessee Board of Osteopathic Examination also requires physicians to earn 40 CME credits every 2 years. However, unlike the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners, these 40 CME credits can be of any type.

The Tennessee Board of Osteopathic Examination also requires Prescribers with a DEA Registration to earn at least two credits on Controlled Substance Prescribing. Those without a DEA Registration must earn at least two credits on Prescribing Practices.

Texas CME Requirements

48 CME Credits every 2 years
- 24 must be AMA, AOA and/or AAFP Category 1 Credits™
- 2 must be on Medical Ethics CME and/or Professional Responsibility

The Texas Medical Board requires physicians to earn 48 CME Credits every 2 years. At least 24 of these 48 CME credits must be AMA, AOA, and/or AAFP Category 1 Credits™. In addition, 2 of the 48 credits must be on the topic of Medical Ethics and/or Professional Responsibility.

It is important to note that 24 of the 48 credits can be informal credits. Informal credits can be earned by self study, attending hospitals, and grand rounds.

Utah CME Requirements

40 CME Credits every 2 years
- 34 must be Category 1 Credits

The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing requires physicians to earn 40 CME Credits every 2 years. At least 34 of these 40 credits must be Category 1 Credits.

Physicians with a Controlled Substance license must also earn 4 credits on the topic of Substance Prescribing. A total of .5 credits must be obtained through the DOPL tutorial.

Vermont CME Requirements

30 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years
- 1 must be on Hospice, Palliative Care CME, or Pain Management CME

The Vermont Board of Medical Practice requires physicians to earn 30 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years. At least 1 of these 30 credits must be on the topic of Hospice, Palliative Care, or Pain Management.

Physicians that prescribe substances have an additional requirement. In addition to the general board requirements, they must earn at least 2 credits on the topic of Safe and Effective Prescribing of Controlled Substances.

The Vermont Board of Osteopathic Physicians also requires physicians to earn 30 CME Credits every 2 years. Unlike the Vermont Board of Medical Practice, the credits do not have to be Category 1 Credits and can be credits of any type. 12 of the credits, however, do need to be on Osteopathic-Related subjects.

Virginia CME Requirements

60 CME Credits every 2 years
- 30 must be Category 1 Credits
- 2 must be on Controlled Substances

The Virginia Board of Medicine requires physicians to earn 60 CME Credits every 2 years. At least 30 of these 60 credits must be Category 1 Credits. In addition, the board requires 2 of the 60 credits needed for renewal to be on the topic of Controlled Substances.

Washington CME Requirements

200 CME Credits every 4 years

The Washington State Medical Quality Assurance Commission requires physicians to earn 200 CME credits every 4 years. A maximum of 80 credits can be Category 2 credits, a maximum of 80 credits can be Category 3 credits, and a maximum of 80 credits can be Category 4 credits.

Another option that fulfills the board's requirements is certification or recertification by a specialty board. This can act as an equivalent to 200 CME Credits.

The Washington State Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery has different CME requirements than the Washington State Medical Quality Assurance Commission. This board requires physicians to earn 150 CME Credits every 3 years. At least 60 of the 150 credits must be Category 1-A Credits.

West Virginia CME Requirements

50 Category 1 Credits every 2 years
- 30 must be in the physician's primary area of practice
- 3 must be on Best Practices Prescribing Controlled Substances CME and Drug Diversion Training.

The West Virginia Board of Medicine requires physicians to earn 50 Category 1 Credits every 2 years. At least 30 of these credits must be in the physician's primary area of practice. Another requirement is that at least 3 of the credits earned during the renewal cycle must be on the topic of Best Practices Prescribing of Controlled Substances and Drug Diversion Training.

The West Virginia Board of Osteopathy requires physicians to earn fewer CME credits during the renewal process than the West Virginia Board of Medicine. This board requires physicians to earn 32 credits every 2 years. At least 16 of the 32 credits must be AOA Category 1-A or 1-B Credits™. Physicians with a license to prescribe, administer, or dispense controlled substances must earn 3 of the 32 CME credits through a board-approved course during the renewal period.

Wisconsin CME Requirements

30 AMA, AOA, and/or ACCME Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years
2 credits on Responsible Opioid Prescribing

The State of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services requires physicians to earn 30 AMA, AOA, and/or ACCME Category 1 Credits™ every 2 years. Physicians must also earn 2 credits on responsible opioid prescribing to meet the board's requirements.

Wyoming CME Requirements

60 AMA Category 1 or 2 Credits™, AOA Credits™, or SA Activities every 3 years

The Wyoming Board of Medicine requires physicians to earn 60 CME credits every 3 years. These credits can be AMA Category 1 or 2 Credits™, AOA Credits™, or self-assessment activities.
